What is acupuncture?
Originating in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Acupuncture involves stimulation of anatomical points on the body with a thin, solid, sterile, metallic needles. The acupuncture points used vary, depending on the client's complaints and findings at examination.
How does acupuncture work?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), health is maintained when the body's two forces, yin and yang, are in balance. Continued yin/yang imbalances will ultimately lead to blockages in the flow of Qi (vital energy) along Qi meridians, which results in illnesses. There are 12 main Qi meridians and 8 extraordinary Qi meridians and there are more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body which connect with these meridians. In TCM, acupuncture is one of the key modalities to enhancing the flow of Qi. We view our body as a garden where the plants can grow vibrant and thrive in the right environment. If the body is too hot, then we seeks to cool it down. If it is too cool, we try to warm it up. If it is too dry, we try to moisten it and vice versa.
What does acupuncture feel like?
People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted. Some people are energized by treatments while others feel relaxed. The FDA approved acupuncture needles for use by licensed and qualified practitioners in 1996. Our Clinic uses only single-use sterilized disposable needles.
